Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is an individual tax return?

An individual tax return is a document you lodge with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) each financial year that reports your income, deductions, tax offsets, and other financial details. It determines whether you owe tax or are eligible for a refund

You generally need to lodge an individual tax return if the ATO requires one based on your circumstances for the financial year. This commonly includes people who:

  • earned income (for example wages/salary, contractor income, business/sole trader income, or investment income),

  • had tax withheld from pay or payments and need to finalise their tax position (including claiming a refund if applicable),

  • have obligations or items that are assessed through a return (for example certain tax offsets, Medicare-related items, or other ATO-assessed amounts), or

  • received advice/notification from the ATO that a return is expected.

If you work out that you don’t need to lodge a return, the ATO generally expects you to submit a non-lodgment advice (“return not necessary”) for that year instead.

The standard deadline for individuals is 31 October each year if you’re lodging your own return. If you use a registered tax agent, you may have extended lodgement dates, but you must be registered with them before the deadline.

Common documents include:

  • Payment summaries or income statements (from your employer)

  • Bank interest statements

  • Dividend statements

  • Records of deductions (work-related, investment, donations)

  • Private health insurance statement

  • Tax file number (TFN)

We provide a simple checklist to help you gather everything.

You can claim deductions that are directly related to earning your income, such as:

  • Work-related expenses

  • Vehicle and travel costs

  • Self-education and professional development

  • Tools and equipment

  • Union or professional membership fees

We can help you identify what applies to your situation.

Yes. Most Australians can lodge online using myTax via myGov. Alternatively, we can prepare and lodge it for you, completely online, without visiting an office

Once your tax return is processed by the ATO, refunds are typically issued within 10–21 business days if lodged electronically. Using a tax agent may speed up the process further.

Lodging late may result in a penalty or interest charges from the ATO. If you are late because of circumstances beyond your control, we can help you manage the process and communicate with the ATO if needed.

Our fees depend on the complexity of your tax situation. We offer transparent pricing and can provide a free quote before you proceed, so you know exactly what to expect.

A registered tax agent can:

  • Maximise legitimate deductions

  • Reduce errors and audit risk

  • Provide personalised advice

  • Help with overdue or complex returns
And if you lodge through an agent, you may qualify for later lodgement deadlines.
